Vince Camuto / Sole Society Email Scam

An email scam is going viral, attempting to steal Americans’ information, including credit card details, by threatening legal action in the name of Vinne Camuto. The scammers behind this scheme are employing email spoofing in order to make the emails look as if they are sent from a Vince Camuto email address: email@vincecamuto.com. Other emails are reported to notify that there’s a problem with your order.

Vince Camuto (who passed away in 2015) was a women’s footwear designer. Other than founding Nine West, he was also the CEO of Camuto Group, the maker of the Jessica Simpson brand.

Do NOT worry. No legal action will be taken against you. These emails are FAKE.

Email spoofing is a very dangerous scam since most of us immediately open an email sent from someone we know. Sometimes they even make it seem as if we have sent the email to ourselves (as “proof” that the scammers have access to our email account).

It is also possible that scammers hacked the vincecamuto.com marketing email account, though it is less likely.

Two types of emails were reported:

  1. An email threatening legal action if the recipient doesn’t verify their credit card for past and present orders.
  2. An email stating that there is something wrong with the recipient’s order, which requires verifying the credit card information.

Some of the emails may have also been sent from Sole Society, another website which sells shoes, as well as from “company lawyers.”

Here’s the fake email which has been sent:

HELLO.

YOU HAVE TO VERIFY YOUR CREDIT CARD WITH THE DATE OF 08/25/2020. WE HAVE TO DO THIS FOR YOUR PAST ORDERS AND CURRENT ORDERS. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE…. THIS IS A PROCESS THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED DUE TO YOUR ACCOUNT SECURITY AND NEW LAWS.

Conclusion

Many people have received not one email, but more and even up to 10-15 emails at odd hours. The fact that many emails were sent to the same people makes it easier to realize it’s a scam. A legitimate sender would only send one email.

Another telltale sign exposing this is a scam would be the poor grammar used in these emails.

Moreover, no legitimate company would EVER ask you to verify your credit card information through an email like that.

Obviously, you should not click the link or follow the instructions. If you do, your financial information will be stolen by scammers.

If you have received these or similar emails, you can file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crimes Center, especially if you have responded with your real information.

Also, if you submitted your information, make sure to change your password and check your credit card statement for any fraudulent transactions.

If you wonder why you have received these emails, then you should consider that your email address (and perhaps other information as well) has been compromised in a data breach. To verify that, go to haveibeenpwned.com.

Some people have suggested that buying from the brand even at a retailer like Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, or Dillard’s was their ticket to this mailing list.
