About HomeServe USA

HomeServe USA claims to provide service to over 4 million customers, with more than 5.6 million contracts in the US.

HomeServe USA is the North American branch of HomeServe PLC, a London Stock Exchange listed company in the Top 200 UK Companies by Market Capitalization.

Plans from HomeServe help protect homeowners against the high costs and frustrations surrounding emergency home repairs with repair service plans that cover parts and labor for repairs such as:

  • electrical
  • gas
  • heating
  • cooling
  • water systems
  • multi-home systems

HomeServce USA Corp. reflects an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (as of September 30th, 2019).

Plans are said to be affordable, or atleast to some HomeService members “Worth the nominal cost,” and are conducted through their 24/7 repair hotline by local, licensed, and insured technicians and come with a one-year guarantee* on all covered parts.

Typically if a service line breaks the homeowner is responsible for the repairs, which could amount between $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Allegedly only 39% of Americans say that they would pay for a $1,000 unplanned expense, according to a 2018 CNN Money Article.

HomeServe serves customers of the UK, US and Canada.

Homeserve USA Complaints

HomeServe renders a service of value but that hasn’t stopped their business from accruing negative reviews and complaints over the years.

A visit at the Better Business Bureau will reveal that over the last 3 years, HomeServe has amassed 339 complaints and of those only 135 complaints we resolved or closed.

Shared below are some of the most relevant complaints we found across the web:

“I purchased insurance from HomeServe USA Repair Management Corp. (HomeServe) to cover my main indoor and outdoor sewer lines in the month of May 2019. This insurance policy is good for one year. I have been purchasing insurance from HomeServe for many years but I have never called them for any service. On Wednesday, August 21, 2019 I called HomeServe for assistance with plumbing because my basement was flooded with sewer water and sewer matter. A plumber was dispatched and he reported that there was a crack in the main sewer line. HomeServe said that they could not pay for the repairs because I own a 4-family home. I requested service for the insured lines not for any of the apartments. I called ***** ****** the next day when HomeServe refused to get the job done. I have since called HomeServe daily requesting that they refund me for the work done or return my full insurance money for the past two years because they insisted that none of the pipe lines in my house were insured. Since none of the lines are insured then, I think that I am entitled to a refund of any money that I paid as insurance to HomeServe. Please advise.”

This complaint was resolved, however:

“Hi, I received a phone call from a manager, Diana, at Home Serve and she informed me that I will receive a full refund for all of the insurance policies that I bought from the company.  The agent, Diana, promised to send a check to me within two days. She gave me a phone number: ###-###-#### to contact her if I did not receive the check in a week.  Thank you for all of your help in this matter.”

“I had a contract with other company that sold to HOME SERVE w/o my knowledge. When I called for service HOME SERVE had dropped some of my previous coverage w/o notice. Their action caused me to cancel 2 of the 3 services I had. I had to pay $260 for a repair that was once covered before HOME SERVE dropped coverage w/o notice I canceled in advance of coverage date for service I was billed for. I am due a credit of $11.94. Home Serve billing is through one of my utility carrier. This amount is on my bill until HOME SERVE issue this credit I am due.”

“I have had homeserv out to repair the same Ac unit over 7 times in the past 12 months and each time it’s a new more expensive problem. I was assured with the last service that if the problem was not resolved with the part needed they would refund the cost. 2 weeks later my AC unit again is not working. Spoke to a so called supervisor named Greg at ###-###-#### he was beyond rude and did not help in anyway. I asked to speak to his supervisor on 3 different occasions and received no phone call back or connection. Overall this unit has $7,000 plus the monthly service contract. An entire new system would have been cheaper. My wife is 9 months pregnant and there has been a heatwave. This is completely detrimental to my wife’s well being and completely negligent on HomeServe part.”

HomeServe USA Reviews

HomeServe reflects just under a 2 out of 5 star rating at ConsumerAffairs.

Despite their less than nominal review ratings, HomeServe appears to be rendering services of value to many of their members still.

Shared below are the 3 most recent reviews we found at ConsumerAffairs:

Kating of Charleston, WV – “Coe Electric, Dan Coe Owner- was dispatched to my residence after a tornado came through South Charleston, WV. Causing significant damage to our power lines & our aeration system because the power pole fell on top of it. My power pole was broken, all the lines were laying down & aeration system smashed. When they arrived they were quick to assess the damage and get started on the job. It started to pour down rain on these guys and they still worked through it. They put up a brand new power pole & installed the service on our Mobile Home instead of another wood pole in the yard. They ran a new wire electrical line under our MH & grounded it to make sure it was up to code and did this all in the same day. The job was almost completed in the same day but due to the inspector not coming out that night we didn’t get power until the next day.”

Barbara of Troy, NY – “My tenant experienced the sudden onset of sewage backup in my older Florida home. I called HomeServe and they sent a representative out four hours from the call. He worked on the issue that night and resolved the problem. My tenant, who is a supervising AC repairman, was very impressed with the HomeServe technician’s responsiveness and effectiveness. I’m completely satisfied and the policy was well worth the nominal cost.”

Deborah of Midlothian, VA – “ My drains in kitchen backed up – including the washer drain on Saturday. I called and although they couldn’t get anyone out till Monday – I kept an open mind even after I read all the negative comments. The plumber they sent was very professional and I was very pleased with the repair as well as Home Serve’s handling of my call. I will continue with my coverage with them through Dominion Power. Thank you Home Serve for saving me the huge plumbing bill I would have had!!”

HomeServe provides a valuable service for homeowners who are looking to protect themselves against the unexpected.

For over a decade, HomeServe USA has helped homeowners protect against the expenses and inconvenience of water, sewer, electrical, heating, and cooling home emergencies by offering affordable coverage and rendering superior service.

Despite the negative reviews, HomeServe is used by millions of homeowners today so naturally negative reviews are going to be part of the business (but over 20 years of good business standing is impressive to say the least).

It took a month to get a hot water heater…ONE MONTH. And that’s with me calling every other day (wait times, like service, are often excessive). After reporting to BBB, it took about a week more to get results. Just made my second claim…this time on Air Conditioning. In Missouri, at 90 degrees F and over 75% humidity, it is a health issue, especially in light of allergies and asthma. Tonight will be second night in hotel, second night with dogs in professional kennel, second day of expenses eating out because my kitchen in unbearably hot. Just reported them to BBB again… we shall see (can’t go a month for this one). The attorney general is next step and after that I’d be interested to know how many individuals would be interested in a class action lawsuit. It’s like after they get your money, they don’t really have contractors to cover the jobs. With the first claim…the water heater…two different contractors told me that they simply don’t get paid. One of them said that he had an unpaid invoice from HomeServe from the prior YEAR! The guy that finally did it, made them pay for the water heater upfront and would not install it until they put money into his paypal. Buyer Beware Hopefully, they will prove me wrong this time by providing quick and satisfying service. The concept that this saves consumers time and worry…is simply not true. They are my stress…

I have HomeServe and have used it several times for major repairs to outdoor plumbing, indoor minor electrical, outdoor major electrical due to tornado damage, central air unit, central heat unit, and several other minor jobs. They had paid 100% of the costs, the service has been excellent, and I will NEVER again be without their insurance. I am elderly and live in a more elderly home. But, I ha e no need to worry about an unforseen high expense. This company is great and we’ll worth the limited expense.😃
